About:
Trumpeter/composer Tomasz Stanko has been a major force in contemporary jazz not only in his native Poland, but on the international scene as well for some 40 years now. He was again voted "Musician of the Decade" by the critics of Jazz Forum in 2000, and was credited, among other things, for his innovations with Jazz Darings (often claimed to be the first "free" jazz group in Europe) way back in '62, as well as for his acclaimed work with Krzysztof Komeda.
Soul of Things is Stanko's latest release for ECM, and features his Polish quartet (Slawomir Kurkiewicz: double-bass, Marcin Wasilewski: piano, Michal
Miskiewicz: drums) of young musicians whom the Master took under his wing when they were still in their teens.
The result is an exquisite 13-part balladesque suite which is at times as quietly intense as it is subtely beautiful, and features Stanko's, by now, immediately identifiable dark tone; while his young and gifted
band mates lay down a rich tapestry of textures and solos to round off a "timeless" feel to Soul of Things.
